TORRIANO, Giovanni. The Italian Tutor; or A new and most compleat Italian grammer, London: printed by Thomas Paine, sold by H. Robinson, 1640.
2 parts in on volume, small 4°, woodcut headpieces and ornamental initials (upper corner of some leaves in pt. I slightly stained, a few leaves at beginning lightly soiled, lower margin of table at end cropped with loss of one line of text on the first leaf and occasional loss of catchword on the following leaves), late 19th-century calf by Leighton, London, with blind-stamped emblems (extremities rubbed), red edges. Provenance: William Stirling [Maxwell] (bookplate and emblems on covers).
FIRST EDITION, though preceded by Torriano's New and easie directions for attaining the Thuscan Italian tongue of 1638. The title to the second part reads A Display of monasyllable particles of the Italian tongve by way of alphabet. Also certaine Dialogues.... The author describes himself as "an Italian and professor of the same within the City of London," and his dedication to Elizabeth Grey, Countess of Kent, is followed by an address to the "Company of Turkey Marchants" for whom his book is especially intended.
