[AUSTEN, Jane (1775-1817)]. Mansfield Park: A novel ... by the author of "Sense and Sensibility," and "Pride and Prejudice," London: T. Egerton, 1814.
3 volumes, 12°, with half titles, contemporary mottled calf by Lubbock of Newcastle with binder's label in volume I, covers with gilt roll-tool borders (rebacked with spine lettered and decorated in gilt, lightly rubbed, some flaking). Provenance: John Waldie (armorial bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. Mansfield Park was composed at Chawton between February 1811 and June 1813, and published in May of the following year in a relatively small edition of perhaps 1250 copies, priced at 18 shillings in boards. This was on a commission basis, Jane Austen retaining the copyright to the work which was sold out by November. Volumes I-II, printed by Sidney, are in Pica roman by Vincent Figgins, of probably ca. 1798; volume II was printed by Roworth in a Caslon Pica roman. Gilson A6; Keynes p. 11; Sadleir I, 62c. (3)
