[JOHNSON, Samuel (1709-1784)]. A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland, London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1775.
8° (lacking errata leaf, old repairs to N3 and P8, occasional spotting and marginal browning, small wormhole at lower margin), green half morocco by William Brown, Edinburgh, spine gilt, t.e.g. (lightly rubbed and sunfaded). Provenance: Iain Ramsay of Kildalton (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. WITH A SHORT NOTE IN JOHNSON'S HAND on a small square of paper (134 x 72mm.) laid down on verso of front blank. The note, which appears to be an order for stationery, reads: "At the Bookseller's a quire of large writing paper -- cut quarto." This is verified by a contemporary note on the same paper stating: "Dr Johnsons hand writing when at Mr Bowles's house at Hele Sepr. 4. 1783." In August 1783 Johnson "went so far as the neighbourhood of Salisbury, to Heale, the seat of William Bowles, Esq.," Boswell records, "a gentleman whom I have heard him praise for exemplary religious order in his family." Johnson noted in his own diary '"August 28 I came to Heale without fatigue. 30, I am entertained quite to my mind"' (Life, Everyman edition, 1973, pp. 477-78). Courtney and Smith p. 122.
McNICOL, Donald (d. 1802). Remarks on Dr. Samuel Johnson's Journey to the Hebrides, London: T. Cadell, 1779. 8°, half title (occasional light spotting, one or two leaves frayed), green half morocco near uniform with the previous work, t.e.g. (lightly rubbed and sunfaded). Provenance: Capt. Carnegie (ownership inscription on title); Iain Ramsay of Kildalton (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of a work described by Boswell as "a scurrilous volume, larger than Johnson's own, filled with malignant abuse." Cf. Courtney and Smith pp. 120-121. (2)
