INVITATIONS TO VERSAILLES -- "Bal Paré à Versailles pour le mariage de Monsieur le Dauphin le Mercredi 24 Fevrier 1745," engraved invitation by C. Cochin the Younger, [?Paris: 1745], 153 x 192mm., authorised by De Bonneval, the wording within an elaborate cartouche incorporating cherubs, musical instruments, garlands of flowers, and coat-of-arms (lightly browned at edges). Together with a second invitation to a "Bal Paré" on the occasion of the Daupin's marriage 9 February 1747, also engraved by Cochin, with a similar cartouche incorporating a rising sun. Both laid down on opposite pages in a mid 19th-century scrap album.
The rest of the quarto album (260 x 195mm.) devoted to small engravings and woodcuts, culs-de-lampe, and cut-out initials, also containing a collection of early 19th-century designs for visiting cards, and another collection of 24 pictorial envelopes, 8 from a series printed by Fores, and a Valentine card dated 1851, mounted or inserted on 60 leaves. Black half morocco, front cover with gilt label reading "Miscellaneous," gilt edges (rubbed). Provenance: Gerald Ponsonby, 1880 (ownership label). Together with a second album of similar size and interest, and with the same provenance. (2)
