BRACCI, Pietro (1700-1773) -- A collection of 296 white plaster medallions with gilt surrounds, mounted on blue paper in 7 original display boxes (248 x 145mm.), Rome: mid 18th century, each box with a double display frame and manuscript index laid down at front and rear, the indices variously headed with the names of the museums, most in Italy, where the originals can be seen (one medallion slightly cracked), the boxes in uniform contemporary half calf, spot-marbled boards, smooth gilt spines with the producer's name "Bracci" in one compartment, and with titles and volume numbers below, volumes I-IV titled "Musei e Gabbinetti," volume V "Vari Monumenti," and volumes VII-VIII "Uomi Illustri" (lacking vol. VI).
Together with an additional eighth volume, with a printed index headed "Li Dodici Cesari," and a printed label giving details of manufacture, the 12 medallions in double blue plush velvet mount, near uniform box (but without volume no. on spine).
BRACCI'S MEDALLIONS ARE BOTH EXQUISITELY MADE AND FINELY PRESERVED. The indices relate them to gems, sculptures, marbles, and pictures, of both antiquity and the Renaissance. What is especially interesting is the way they have been put into volume-form and treated almost as a book-publishing venture. (8)
