2° (359 x 250mm), text in English and French, hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece and 51 plates by I. Clark after Bradford and H. Michel, some heightened with gum arabic (occasional spotting or light marking, some offsetting onto text, lacking part title to 'Chronological and Historical Retrospective'), contemporary straight-grained crimson morocco gilt, endpapers watermarked 1821-22, the boards panelled with blind fillets and palmette rolls, enclosed within gilt broad and narrow fillets and floral rolls, borders of blind palmette rolls, roll-tooled gilt turn-ins, the spine gilt in compartments, titled in one, the others decorated with ornate lozenges within gilt frames, g.e. (extremities a little rubbed and scuffed, small scuff-marks on boards, a few skilfully repaired). Provenance: a few pencilled annotations.
The present issue contains a frontispiece and 51 plates, as called for in the plate list. Abbey calls for a frontispiece and 52 plates, which include '39. Pass near Villa France' and '40. View near Villa Franca'; in the present copy, the plate list simply calls for a plate described as 'View and Pass near Villa Franca'. This issue does not contain the uncoloured plate of the monument to Sir John Moore at Corunna, which 'occurs in some, but not all, editions' (Abbey). Abbey Travel 137; cf. Brunet I, 1197; Tooley 109.
