APIANUS, Petrus (1495-1552). Cosmographia, Antwerp: Gregorio Bonito, 1545.
Small 4° (228 x 143mm.), title with large woodcut of a globe, printer's device on verso of last leaf, numerous astronomical and geographical woodcuts, 6 full-page, those on c2, c3, d1, h2 and O3 with volvelles, folding map, ornamental woodcut initials (small wormhole in A1-B2 and O4-S4, M2 with small burn hole, a few parts of volvelles lightly creased, occasional light spotting and faint waterstaining), modern brown morocco, covers with a circular dentelled centrepiece in blind within a rectangular filet and foliate border, spines with raised bands (occasional light scuff marks), g.e.; old manuscript inscription on title.
First printed at Landshut in 1524 this was Apianus' first major work in which he was the first to suggest the lunar distance method of finding longitude. This version by Gemma Frisus was first printed at Antwerp in 1533 and contains Frisius' treatise on topographical triangulation, a landmark in the history of cartography.
