VESALIUS, Andreas (1514-1564). Librorum de humani corporis fabrica epitome. Edited by Nicolaas Fonteyn (fl.1622-44). Amsterdam: Jan Jansson, 1642.

2° (398 x 250mm), engraved title showing an anatomical theatre, portrait of Vesalius and 39 plates, of which one is folding, 3 engraved text illustrations, initials, head-piece (a few marginal spots, occasional offsetting, plates i & n trimmed to margin), contemporary vellum.

De humani corporis was first published in 1543, and in the same year appeared the Epitome, providing a more easily accessible -- both financially and intellectually -- outline and key to the larger work. The present edition of the Epitome was edited by the Dutch scholar Nicolaas Fonteyn, following the text of Hendrik Botter (1600 and later). He has added 3 new text engravings to illustrate his introductory matter. The full-page plates from both the Fabrica and Epitome are copied from German editions by Jacob Bauman (Nuremberg 1551 and later), which were in turn copied from those illustrating Thomas Geminus's Latin and English editions. Cushing VI.D.13; Krivatsy 12322; Osler 575; Waller 9920.
