[ENGLISH CIVIL WAR]. Autograph letter signed by Colonel William White to Ferdinando, 2nd Baron FAIRFAX (Commander of Parliamentary forces in Yorkshire), London, 16 May 1647, sending information on the poor condition of the Royalists ('the Rebells generally want Amunic[i]on and money'), referring to a letter from Cromwell, and communicating the desire of certain members of the House of Commons ('whom yr Ldp may imagine') 'to have the Army speedily disbanded', one page, folio, integral address leaf (part of integral leaf excised, seal tear).
[POPISH PLOT]. Autograph letter signed by James Babington to Henry, 4th Lord Fairfax, London, 20 November 1678, describing the early stages of the Popish Plot hysteria, including the trial of Edward Coleman (secretary to the Duchess of York), the murder of Sir Edmundbery Godfrey and the suspicions cast upon prominent catholics: 'I feare the Ld Bellasis is more then ordinaryly engaged with the conspiracy', one page, folio, integral address leaf (seal tear).
