Holst's seven-movement suite The Planets (1914-1917) marked his emergence as a major composer; the quotation is dated a month after the first, private, performance of the work on 29 September 1918 at Queen's Hall under Sir Adrian Boult. It was first performed in public at a Philharmonic Concert in 1919.
