AN IMPORTANT HISTORIC .45 COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER, NO. 25345 FOR 1876, BRIDGEPORT RIG, KNIFE AND RESTRAINTS, USED NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TEXAS, SHERIFF A.J. SPRADLEY
The revolver, nickel plated and mounted with stud for use with Bridgeport Co. patent spring clip, set on a heavy leather cartridge loop belt marked A.J. SPRADLEY, an ivory handled dirk marked I*XL/George Wostenholms/Celebrated/Cutlery, a restraining device, a first-edition copy of "A Texas Sheriff" by Henry C. Fuller, and an original studio portrait of Sheriff Spradley and his dog, this same photo was used for the cover of aforementioned book.
7½ inch (19 cm.) barrel
Revolver with brown patina with generous amounts of original nickel plating overall, belt worn but sound, dirk with heavily sharpened edges, restraining device, book and photo fine.
A.J. (John) Spradley, (born, Simpson County, Mississippi, March 8, 1853 - died, Nacogdoches, Texas, 1940), elected sheriff of Nacogdoches County in 1884. During his career some of the most notorious murders and feuds in the history of east Texas occured, Sheriff Spradley was instrumental in pursuing and apprehending the criminals involved. He was known to have worn a special steel shirt for protection. (7)
