A SCARCE SOUTHERN .58 PERCUSSION HALF-STOCK RIFLE, THE LOCK MARKED "HILL RIFLE/TYLER/TEX/CAL 54", CIRCA 1860S
The octagonal barrel with brass fore-sight and buck-horn rear sight, inlaid with two German-silver bands at breech, ramrod thimbles (ramrod rib loose), military percussion lock marked HILL RIFLE/TYLER/TEX/CAL 54, walnut half stock with pewter fore-end tip, iron trigger guard and butt plate, cheekpiece, ramrod, together with a framed facsimile print of this rifle and it's statistics, and a copy of Tyler, Texas, C.S.A. by William A. Albaugh, III
41½ inch (105.3 cm.) barrel
Dark patina overall, ramrod rib loose as noted, losses to stock at lock plate
The lock of this rifle is from a rare group of military rifles made up in Tyler, Texas, Confederate States of America during the Civil War. Markings vary, and complete military rifles are very rare. The number of locks, though rare, exceeds the number of Civil War period rifles known, and as such it is not impossible that this rifle was built up post-war. (3)
