TWO HISTORIC LETTERS CONCERNING THE VOLCANIC REPEATING ARMS COMPANY
1856
The two letters addressed to S. L. Talcott from J.W. Post (sales agent for the Smith & Wesson and contributor to the formation of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. - see History of Smith & Wesson, by Roy G. Jinks)
In the first letter dated July 10th 1856, Post writes Talcott, "That 'foreign friend' has been in this morning & wishes to take with him 2. 16 1/2 in Bbl. - solid breech Carbines - one to go with the present Ball and one to be used with Hick's improvement, he says he will wait till the 20 or 21 for them, if we will try & finish them - can it be done? He says the Pistol is not sufficient to show the principle to a Govt.". He goes on to say that "they want to arm 8. Regiments with Pistols & Rifles!"
The second letter to Talcott dated August 15th, 1856, Post writes "We returned you that lot of five Pistols yesterday for the third time the (sic) were settled in the old account with J.W. Post Esq." Signed for J.W. Post by a secretary. (2)
