Sighted barrel marked COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A., two-line patent dated frame, engraved overall with scrolls, dots, star-bursts, zig-zag lines and fans, nickel plated finish, blued screws and cylinder pin, mother-of-pearl grips, backstrap inscribed Capt. W.J. McDONALD, together with a copy of Captain Bill McDonald: Texas Ranger by Albert Bigelow Paine, J.J. Little & Ives Co., New York, 1909 (Special Subscription Edition), factory letter, photograph of Capt. Clint Peoples holding this revolver, a notorised letter and a ALS from Mrs. Carol Horton Tullis, Secretary of the Texas Historical Society
4¾ inch (12.1 cm.) barrel
A factory letter from R.H. Wagner to Gaines de Graffenried, confirms the revolver's features and notes that the revolver was sold to Simmons Hardware Company of St. Louis, and shipped to A.J. Anderson of Ft. Worth. With a second Factory letter reiterating the above information.
Retaining most original nickel plated finish, showing some wear at cylinder fluted and staining/flaking at leading edge of frame.
William J. (Bill) McDonald, (1852-1918). Appointed Captain of Company B, Frontier Battalion of Texas Rangers by Governor James P. Hogg in January 1891. Credited with the famous saying "one riot, one Ranger", Capt. Bill McDonald's reputation was such that he was perhaps the most respected and most feared lawmen in Texas. In 1893, Capt. Bill McDonald killed the corrupt Childress sheriff John Pierce Matthews in a vicious gun-fight where McDonald took four .45 bullets.
Considered cool and fearless, Capt. McDonald was not only the guide for President Teddy Roosevelt's Big-Wolf Hunt, but was also later President Woodrow Wilson's bodyguard.
