Lot Essay

A study for the portrait of Guerri of the Congregazione dei Sacri Chiodi, depicted as a donor, in a large Crucifixion in the church of San Giorgio, Siena, painted in 1601-2. Padre Guerri had founded the church in 1585 and Vanni was a member of the congregation. A copy after the present drawing, possibly made in preparation for an engraving, is in the Louvre, F. Viatte, Dessins Toscans XVIe- XVIIIe Siècles 1560-1640, Paris, 1988, no. 548, illustrated.
