AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY SAM HOUSTON, AS PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS, NO DATE

Houston writes to Maj. Moody to confirm the pay for a an officer serving in the aftermath of the Texas Revolution, "Mr. Northrup is entitled to pay as a first lieutenant with the addition of ten dollars and forage for one horse. He was only commissary to a Battalion and not even a Regiment...." He gives an account of Northrup entering service of the Republic in November 1836 and his standard per diem of three rations a day. Houston aslo remarks that Northrup retained a "servant" who drew his rations from the "public supplies"
