Lot Essay

Alexander Calder's charming table top standing mobile, Black, Yellow, Red, 1961 was a cherished artwork in the distinguished collection of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Jaffe. The Hollywood mogul and his wife purchased the Calder early in their collecting life and had the privledge of meeting the artist and spending time with him in his studio. Black, Yellow, Red occupied a special spot in the Jaffe home in Los Angeles for nearly 35 years until Mr. Jaffe's death. While the top element originally belonged to another base (that base is now also reconfigured), the Jaffe's enjoyed Black, Yellow, Red it in the present configuration since they purchased the standing mobile in 1961.
