Lot Essay
A drawing similar in composition to the present sheet and apparently by the same hand is at Chatsworth, M. Jaffé, The Devonshire Collection of Italian Drawings, Roman and Neapolitan Schools, London, 1994, no. 152, illustrated, as attributed to Cherubino Alberti. The Chatsworth drawing, smaller than this one, is laid down on a Talman mount.
The handling is comparable to that in drawings by Luini at Christ Church, Oxford, J. Byam Shaw, Drawings by Old Masters at Christ Church, Oxford, Oxford, 1976 nos. 1139-40, figs. 689-690. Also characteristic of Luini's more finished drawings is the hatching similar to a modello for the Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence in the Castello Sforzesco, Milan, N. Ward Neilson, A Drawing by Aurelio Luini, Master Drawings, 1985-6, XXIII-XXIV, p. 151, pl. 6.
An old copy of the present drawing was offered at Sotheby's, London, 18 April 1994, lot 77, illustrated.
