Saint Jerome in the Wilderness

Oil modelli by Palma are relatively rare. Comparable examples include those in the Louvre for the painting of the Dead Christ supported by Angels in the church of the Ognissanti, Venice, and the Madonna and Child with Faith and Saint Magnus crowning Venice, in the church of San Jeremia, S.M. Rinaldi, Palma il Giovane, L'opera completa, Milan, 1984, figs. 569 and 583. A modello similar in handling to the present one was sold from the Harewood Collection at Christie's, London, 2 July 1985, lot 35, illustrated.
