Professor Mahoney suggests that these studies, particularly the upper figure, are related to the etching of The Academy of Plato dated circa 1662, Illustrated Bartsch XX, 269. Richard Wallace lists drawings related to the print in the British Museum, at Leipzig, Houston, Rome and formerly from the Odescalchi collection, R.W. Wallace, The Etchings of Salvator Rosa, Princeton, 1979, under no. 109a.
