Lot Essay

Canini was a prolific designer of book illustrations though most of his prints were engraved but by professional engravers such as Picart, Greuter, Vallet or Cornelis Bloemaert. In the 1640s and 1650s Cornelis Bloemaert engraved a number of Canini's frontispiece designs, one of which, for Vasari's 1647 edition of Le vite de'pittori (fig. 1), is very close in composition to the present drawing, N.
