A drawing in the same technique of a man transporting a log on his shoulder is in the Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe del Comune, Genoa, L. Muti and D. de Sarno Prignano, Alessandro Magnasco, Faenza, 1994, fig. 74.
Many of Magnasco's drawings bear a characteristic number, usually placed in the upper left corner by the artist. This and the following lot are numbered '26' and the same number can be also found on a similar study of Men carrying a Log and other Figures in different Poses in the Uffizi (inv. 7081F, B. Geiger, I disegni del Magnasco, Padua, 1945, pl. 26). It seems that Magnasco numbered his drawings according to the subject represented, though is not always consistent. There are, for instance, several drawings of different subjects all inscribed with the number '28', Alessandro Magnasco, 1667-1749, exhib. cat., Milan, 1996, p. 300, no. 100.
