Lot Essay

The present lot is a study for one of Willink's most well known paintings Simeon de Zuilenheilige from 1939, now in the collection of the Gemeente Museum in The Hague (see H. Jaffé, Carel Willink, no.187). Willink made several preliminairy sketches for this painting. To get the right pose he even photographed himself sitting on the column.
