The drawings were taken from albums similar to those given by Monsignore Sartori Canova, the artist's brother, to the Museo Civico in Bassano in 1851. Of the numerous albums that were part of the donation, only a few, such as C2, F2, F3, F7 and F8, have the same format, the same numbering and similar subjects, E. Bassi, Il Museo Civico di Bassano, I Disegni di Antonio Canova, exhib. cat., Venice, Fondazione Cini, 1959. The albums in Bassano are accompanied by certificates from Sartori Canova, mostly dated 1851.
These pages came from the two albums kept by the Canal family and mentioned by E. Bassi, op. cit., p. 15. They were probably removed by the Contessa Antonietta Canal, the artist's niece, and then given to Lucia Alexander in Florence, to thank her for '...magnifici doni, che io mi vergogno di non poter corrispondere verso di Lei come il mio cuore bramerebbe. Io so che Lei é molto amante delle memorie del Canova, perciò mi permetto offrir le 4 schizzi dello stesso Scultore...' (Letter dated 7 January 1876). The Contessa included with the letter and drawings a certificate that the drawings were by her uncle: 'Attesto che questi schizzi sono tutti di mano di mio Zio Antonio Canova Crespano 7 Gennajo 1876 Antonietta B. Canal'.
The drawings and the letter are enclosed in an envelope addressed 'Alla Distinta Signora la Signora Lucia Alexander' with a folder inscribed 'These ricordi of Canova were given to me by his niece Contessa Canal L.A.'.
