Lot Essay

A study for the Magdalene kneeling before Christ in the Noli me tangere in the Cathedral of Saint-Véran in Cavaillon, A. Schnapper, Mignard d'Avignon, exhib. cat., Avignon, Palais des Papes, 1979, no. 91, illustrated. The picture is dated by Professor Schnapper to 1638-40.
Nicolas Mignard's draughtsmanship was little known until 1978 when one hundred drawings from his studio were acquired by the Louvre. He was a left handed artist.
