A small archive of papers mainly relating to Philadelphia real-estate, including: Autograph document signed ("John Morton," with flourish), n.p., n.d. 1 page, 158 x 195 mm., neatly separated along center fold, contemporary ink mark affecting two letters of signature. JOHN MORTON, SURVEYOR. A neatly drawn survey of a plot of land purchased by Jacob Worrall, probably in Ridley Township, Chester County Pennsylvania. Labeling of the survey is in Morton's hand. At the bottom he has signed as the surveyor. -- MORTON. Manuscript document signed twice ("John Morton," one bold with flourish), with 6 lines of autograph attestment, Chester County, Pennsylvania, 10 October 1760. 1 page, 352 x 680 mm., ON PARCHMENT, scalloped top edge, minor staining and soiling. Jonathan Morton witnesses and attests to the sale of land in Ridley Township to Jacob Worrall. -- PHILADELPHIA AND VICINITY. 40 manuscript and partly printed documents, one signed by Charles Biddle, some on parchment, recording the sale and transfer of land in the city of Philadelphia, Southwark, Northern Liberties and Ridley Township, dating between 1689 and 1871. Many deeds, including a manuscript history of all transfers of the land accomplished in 1848, directly relate to a plot on Chestnut Street between 6th and 7th streets, one block away from Independence Hall (on Chestnut, between 5th and 6th). Other deeds and brief land transfer histories mention Walnut Street, Locust Street, Spruce Street and the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. The oldest dates to the initial decade of settlement in Philadelphia and pertains to a plot of land on Walnut Street. Also included are two fire insurance policies from 1843 and 1853 and three shares in the Times Publishing Company of Philadelphia from 1881. Together approximately fifty items. (50)
