Volume I only (of IV), 2o (531 x 375 mm). Letterpress half-title, title-page and text, additional lithographic title-page printed in gold and red. Mounted on guards throughout. (Some foxing, heaviest on the lithographic title-page.) 50 tinted lithographic plates by and after Flandin, printed by Bertauts. (Foxed, some small marginal chips.) Contemporary French red morocco gilt, white watered silk linings (rubbed at extremities, some scuffing).

FIRST EDITION. Flandin first visited Persia in 1839 as a member of the embassy, and was sent in 1843 "to assist Botta at the excavations at Nineveh, making drawings of the Assyrian remains. On the way he spent time at Rhodes and in Syria" (Blackmer). The present volume reproduces his earliest drawings of Constantinople, the Bosphorus and Smyrna. Blackmer 601; Brunet II.1281.
