Lot Essay

Gamelin specialized in large-sized drawings of battle scenes and was received as a battle painter in the Accademia di San Luca in 1771. A similar large drawing is in the Louis-Antoine Prat collection, Masterful Studies, Three Centuries of French Drawings in the Prat Collection, exhib. cat., National Academy of Design, New York and elsewhere, 1991, no. 52, illustrated.
