Lot Essay

Academic nudes are quite rare in Greuze's oeuvre: a drawing of a man holding a pose similar to the present was executed for Fils ingrat, E. Munhall, Jean-Baptiste Greuze, exhib. cat., Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, 1976, fig. 22. That drawing, also done from the model, shows the hands similarly treated.
