The present work can be added to the architectural paintings given to this recently redefined artist. Previously known only as Pieter Willemsz. from his intials 'PW', the present work and others were identified by Mr. Willem van de Watering who recognized Willemsz. as the artist recorded in the Amsterdam inventories of 1636 as a 'metselaer', alluding to his membership of the Amsterdam Mason's Guild which he joined in 1617. In the 1636 and 1665 inventories he is noted as being responsible for 'perspectives' (see A. Bredius, Künstler-Inventare, pp. 1222 and 1301). He is also mentioned in an unpublished inventory of 1659 (see Bredius' notes in the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorisches Documentatie).
