Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Hans-Ulrich Beck for confirming the date of the painting as 1653. He further notes that the same guardhouse reappears in two other paintings, the first signed and dated 1651 in the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia (see Beck, op. cit., 1973, p. 321, no. 704) and the second signed and dated 1652, previously in the Marcell von Nemes sale, Munich, January 16, 1908, lot 29 (ibid., p. 322, no. 706).
