Lot Essay

Charles Landelle studied art in Paris under the tutorage of Paul Hippolyte Delaroche and attended the renowned Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He painted portraits, historic and Orientalist works which he exhibited at the Salon from 1841, and was commissioned to decorate various churches in Paris, including the Eglise Saint-Sulpice, Eglise Saint-Roch, and Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois.

Although Landelle's oeuvre is rich in subject matter ranging from portraits and religious pictures to anecdotal historical scenes, he is best know for his orientalist compositions. Between 1853 and 1877, Landelle visited North Africa and the Middle East five times, travelling down the Nile Valley between 1875 and 1876, and to returned to Algeria on numerous occasions between 1880 and 1890.
