Lot Essay

The arms on the broken pediment at the top of the entrance gate are those of the Medici family and the Man-of-War on the left of the picture is flying the flags of the Knights of Saint Stephen.

The present lot is after the painting in the Uffizi, Florence, for which many copies are known (see, for example, the painting sold in these Rooms, Oct. 15, 1992, lot 108 for $27,500).
