Lot Essay

The sitter has traditionally been identified as John Dormer of Stadhampton. The head is identical to that in a three-quarter-length portrait sold in these Rooms, 24 March 1961, lot 150, as of an unidentified sitter. There is a version in a private collection where the sitter's name is given as Edmund Waller, although this seems improbable on the basis of the sitter's age.
