Sir James Earle (1755-1817), Gentleman of the Privy Chamber and Surgeon Extraordinary to King George III, married Mary, the daughter of Percival Pott, then surgeon to St. Bartholomew's Hospital. Earle wrote the memoir of Percival Pott, prefixed to the three-volume octavo edition of Potts works published in 1790, and published a number of respected essays on clinical and surgical procedures. This portrait was painted when Sir James Earle was about 20 years old (J.J. Rogers, op. cit., p. 245.).
