Lot Essay

Leemans was a contemporary of Peter Monamy (1681-1749) of whom he may at one time also have been a pupil. His oil paintings are very much in the tradition established by William van de Velde the younger (1633-1707). A very similar composition to the present work by Leemans was sold in these rooms on 14 April 1989, as lot 77, for £17,000.
