In a review of the 1980 Ackermann exhibition, J.N.P. Watson wrote of this picture 'Thomas Woodward shows how close his finger lies on the pulse of creature emotion and physiognomy. You can feel, in the ambience of that silent moor, the wet of the pointer's nose and eye, the trembling of the hare's ear and skin, and all the vibrations passing between the domestic animal and the wild'.
