Lot Essay

The present lot is one of no fewer than twenty versions of a Domenico Ghirlandajo composition that for years were all assigned to Sebastiano Mainardi (see R, van Marle, 1979, loc. cit.). However it is now agreed that he only executed the partial replica in the Museo Civico, San Gimignano.
