Lot Essay

Poulett Lodge was first built during the eighteenth century and formed part of a growing number of waterfronted villas that developed on this stretch of the Thames. Twickenham was popularised throughout the period by Alexander Pope, James Thomson and Horace Walpole who favoured it's proximity to London and it's arcadian atmosphere.

As this set of three pictures show, Poulett Lodge was extensive remodelled in the late nineteenth century and all that remains today is it's loggia, balustrade and boathouse.
