Lot Essay

Pyne painted several smaller versions of this scene and one larger one (no.442) in collaboration with John Phillip, R.A. (1817-1867) which was commissioned by Thomas Agnew and Sons for £250 in 1857. It was exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool during the Grand Loan Exhibition of Pictures in 1886 (no.1219) and was sold in Christie's, 6 November 1995, lot 38.
