Lot Essay

Full-length versions at Capodimonte and in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence, were both regarded by Professor Harold Wethey as the work of Titian with workshop assistance and dated to circa 1554 (Wethey, op. cit., pp. 128-9, nos. 79-80, pls. 179-80). Another three-quarter length variant was sold at Christie's, London, Dec. 10, 1993, lot 81 (£18,000).
