Velino Herrera began painting in 1918 while attending the Santa Fe Indian School. He chose to paint Zia dancers for the purpose of recording ceremonial costume, despite the fact that painting such subjects was considered inappropriate by his fellow community members. This conflict eventually led to his ostracism from the Zia community, (Wykoff, 1996:26-33).
