AN EXEPTIONALLY RARE AND POSSIBLY UNIQUE STAINLESS STEEL CHRONOGRAPH WRISTWATCH WITH PROTOTYPE DIAL
Model: Cosmograph "Yacht Master"/"Paul Newman", Ref:6239, Case No.119602, 1965.
matt silvered dial signed Rolex Cosmograph Yacht Master, applied five minute markers, seconds ring divided into fifths, subsidiary constant seconds, minute and hour recording dials, the 30-minute recording dial with a green, red and silver scale beneath divided into five sectors, 17-jewel movement adjusted to three positions, case with polished bezel calibrated for Units Per Hour, screw down winding crown, screw back with punched reference 6239/C.R.S 1, dial, movement and case signed, stainless steel Oyster bracelet with deployant clasp, 36mm.

This almost certainly unique watch is a prototype for a model which never went into production. In fact, the Yachtmaster model that we know today does not have the traditional coloured timing sector but a calibrated bezel instead. The Yachtmaster name was registered by Rolex in the 1950's but was not put into production until 1995. It is therefore very interesting to find this watch which dates from July 1965 which shows that Rolex were experimenting with designs for a model called Yachtmaster which were not persued, probably due to the difficulty of placing the timing scale in a practical yet pleasing position. This watch is probably the only surviving record of these earlier attempts to produce a Rolex watch with yacht timing scale.

The watch is adapted from a Ref:6239 Cosmograph wristwatch with "Paul Newman" dial. The dial has been altered by Rolex so that the 30-minute recording dial does not have the distinctive square headed markers and beneath a coloured scale has been painted in the traditional yacht timer manner. The dial is signed Rolex Cosmograph Yacht Master.
