Sugata [configuration]: shinogi-zukuri [longitudinal ridge], chu-kissaki [medium point], iori-mune [shallow peaked back]

Kitae [forging pattern]: koitame [fine wood grain] with jinie [hard metal granules over the surface of the blade]

Hamon [tempering pattern]: a combination of notare [undulating], ko-gunome [small pointed curves at frequent intervals] and togari

Boshi [tip]: with a deep pointed turnback in the temper line

Nakago [tang]: suriage [shortened] with katte sagari yasurime [diagonal file marks sloping towards the back of the tang], two mekugi-ana [holes for the retaining pegs], the heel cut off at right angles, signed Jumyo below the lower mekugi-ana

Fitted with a two-tier gilt habaki [collar]

Lot Essay

Several smiths of this name worked in Mino province during the late Muromachi period and up to the beginning of the Shinto period of sword manufacture. This refined blade stands out from the normal run of weapons bearing the signature Jumyo.
