AN ITOMAKI NO TACHI KOSHIRAE [SET OF FITTINGS FOR A TACHI]
Early Edo Period (17th Century and Later)
Comprising: gold nashiji ['pearskin' lacquer] saya [scabbard] with omodaka-mon [water- plantain crests] and Eirakuzeni-mon [crests in the form of Chinese coins] in gold hiramaki-e [low-relief lacquer]; tsuka [hilt] covered in red brocade silk wrapped in brown woven silk tapes forming a lozenge pattern; the metal fittings all shakudo nanako [copper-gold alloy worked with a granulated ground] worked in relief and gilding with the same crests (the menuki [hilt ornaments] later replacements); the tsuba [hand guard] similarly decorated, of typical tachi-mokko form and with a gold rim, the hanging tapes of brown leather, the scabbard probably 20th century, the metal fittings probably early Edo period (17th century)
