A BOWL WITH UNDERGLAZE BLUE AND OVERGLAZE IRON RED DECORATION
Encircled Jiajing six-character mark and of the period (1522-1566)
The bowl with gently curving sides and everted rim decorated on the interior with a central medallion containing a vigorous five-clawed dragon among turbulent waves, on the exterior with a further eight dragons above cresting waves and separated by T-shaped clouds, above a band of upright ruyi heads.
12 5/8 in. (32 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A slightly smaller bowl with similar decoration to the current example is in the Koger collection and is illustrated by J. Ayers in Chinese Ceramics, The Koger Collection, London, 1985, p. 105, no. 80.
