His background is very much a country one; his career began managing a farm adjoining Windsor Great Park, and as his interest in arts and antiques developed, he began dealing from home in between breeding prize-winning Jersey cattle. As his antiques business developed he had less time for farming and spent more time dealing; he opened his first shop on the Fulham Road in 1971. Around this time he began to collect Staffordshire figures and pottery. His premises both in London and latterly in Woodstock were always fascinating caves full of beautiful burr woods, polished brasses and leather, inhabited by exotic pottery animals, figures and especially, pottery birds of all descriptions.
