In a letter to the present owner David Shepherd wrote "Of all the standard designs of steam locomotives following nationalisation, the Standard 9F 2-10-0 was the last and undoubtedly most successful to be built. However, they came too late in the rapidly approaching age of diesel and some 9F's were cut up for scrap after just five years.

My painting portrays a typical scene at the end of December in 1968, a 9F in appalling external condition at the end of her working life, hauling a mixed freight in an industrial setting.

I used No.92203, my own 9F which I purchased in 1967 when only eight years old, and which I subsequently named 'Black Prince'"
