inscribed by Philip Edmund Wells Street 'by H. T. Wells, R.A. (1828-1903)/Mac... head gilley (sic) at Airsaig/about 1867/sketch for boat picture which was originally H.T.W.'s diploma; then/when the Astleys wished to posess it Papa gave the/Volunteer picture to the R.A./in its place' (lower edge)
