Kongsgaard Chardonnay--Vintage 1998
Napa Valley
"The 1998 Chardonnay, with the core part of the blend coming from his family's Stone Crest Vineyard in Coombsville, is even more intense and concentrated than the 1997. It is obviously made from lower yields as there are only 600 cases. The wine seems to have everything concentrated, not only fruit and extract but also acidity. It is tightly knit but incredibly intense, and, like a great Montrachet, requires decanting for 30-45 minutes before consuming. A light green/gold color is followed by a huge, intense, liquid minerality intermixed with subtle notes of marmalade, caramel, honeysuckle, citrus oil, and hazelnut. There is a remarkable vibrancy to this full-bodied, powerful 1998, and the finish lingers for 40+ seconds. It is an amazing Chardonnay that took over 12 months to ferment dry. Moreover, it was aged in 100 new oak, yet there is virtually no wood detectable in the wine's aromas or flavors. Don't be surprised to see this wine evolve for at least a decade - it's that special."
